Pastor Brian Larson
pastor JOHN COWAN

Pastor John grew up attending a mainline denomination, but didn't understand the grace of God until, after emerging from a 3-day LSD-induced coma, he was born again at a Christian commune near Mendocino, California. A musician, Pastor John immediately began writing songs about the Lord as soon as he was born again.  This led to opportunities for him to sing and share his testimony. He has been doing music for the Lord ever since - eventually being joined by his wife, Laura. Today,  many of their kids write and sing for the Lord as well!
In 1976, John went on staff with Maranatha! Music (at the time, an outreach ministry of Calvary Chapel Cost Mesa) as Director of Media. He was right in the middle of a new musical explosion overflowing from a genuine revival among the hippies - who were known as ‘Jesus Freaks’!
In the years that followed, John and Laura and got involved with another ministry, ‘Enjoying Marriage’, a very effective and fruitful ministry used of the Lord for saving, strengthening and equipping marriages across the world. They served as music ministers, as a sharing couple, and, eventually, as Board Members for the Enjoying Marriage ministry.
In 1978, John was the founding Producer for ‘The Word for Today’ radio program and oversaw it’s distribution to radio stations across the country. The Word for Today features the teaching of Pastor Chuck Smith. This ministry also grew explosively and became very fruitful for the Kingdom.
It was during this time that John began to experience a desire to study and teach God’s Word. Soon after, we moved to Sacramento, California and, through the specific (and often miraculous) leading of the Lord, John began Calvary Chapel of Sacramento, where he pastored for 26 years. In 2006, Pastor John joined the pastoral staff of Calvary Chapel Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served as an Associate Pastor along with Terry and Alison Long.
In July 2015,  Laura and I were sent out by Pastor Terry and the body at Calvary Chapel Salt Lake City to minister to pastors, churches and missionaries through Poimen Ministries. Through that ministry, Pastor John has been serving as pastor of Calvary Chapel Bishop, while continuing to be available for other Poimen Ministry assignments. And now? The Lord has brought Pastor John and his wife Laura to Truckee to serve as Transitional Senior Pastor at Calvary Chapel of Truckee while a search is conducted for the next permanent senior pastor.

Rhea's title is "True To His Word," which translated means that Rhea serves the body in many ways including coordinating Pastor Brian's online teaching ministry, managing the church office, and serving as Pastor Brian’s personal secretary. With a background as a magazine editor, her passion is to make Pastor Brian's sermons available in as many forms as possible, including video and audio posts of Pastor Brian’s messages online at our website, YouTube channel, True To His Word Internet Radio, and Facebook, as well as daily radio broadcasts for selected Calvary Chapel radio stations. Rhea is the mother of two young married men: Bryce, a college student living in Spokane, Washington, with his wife Cat, and Brendan, serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Maryland with his wife Cassandra. Both grew up here in Truckee.

Eric Montgomery

Assisting Pastor Eric Montgomery joined the Calvary Chapel of Truckee staff in October 2011 and has oversight of the worship ministry, children's ministry, youth groups, and Salvation Army.  Eric grew up in Sacramento, visiting Truckee as often as he could, and then he moved to Idaho where he lived for thirteen years.

Eric got his start in ministry while serving in the youth ministry at North Country Chapel, a Calvary Chapel in Post Falls, Idaho.  He served as an intern for 2 1/2 years until the Lord called him out to take over the youth ministries at Calvary Chapel Visalia, where he served for five years.

Eric and his wife Gina have two boys, Matthew and Aiden.  They enjoy the outdoors and everything that goes along with it: snowboarding, mountain biking, camping, and waterskiing.

Pastor Brian Larson
pastor EMERITUS brian larson

Brian Larson and his young family moved to Truckee from Southern California in the summer of 1975. Having ministered in denominational churches for about eight years, he stepped out in faith in 1978 and began a nondenominational fellowship in North Tahoe.  By June of 1981, the small fellowship had moved to the high school auditorium in Truckee, and it was then that we became known as Calvary Chapel of Truckee. Pastor Brian stepped back from ministering as Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel of Truckee on October 13, 2019, after 38-plus years.

It has been Pastor Brian’s vision that this church would be a God-built church. In other words, we would not depend on the methods and means of man, but solely on the guiding and direction of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, the emphasis of this ministry is simply on the building up of the body of Christ through the clear, objective teaching of the Word of God, the praise and worship of His Name, and diligent prayer; seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit in all we undertake as a church. He firmly believes that as the body is fed and nourished in His Word, we will grow in His grace and love, and the work of the Lord will flourish, with God accomplishing His purposes and plans through the body as a whole. Over the years, Pastor Brian has witnessed the faithfulness of God to guide and build His church.
